LetsRun.com, the site where runner intellectualism goes to die, recently held a poll of who will win the upcoming Fifth Avenue Mile here in New York. Carl noticed that almost 10% of the voters thought that the recent American 800m champion Nick Symmonds would win the race over the likes of Bernard Lagat, Nick Willis and Kevin Sullivan.
Here’s the rundown of each of the aforementioned athletes’ mile PRs:
- Symmonds - 3:56.72i
- Lagat - 3:47.28
- Willis - 3:50.66
- Sullivan - 3:50.36
Willis just won Bronze in the Olympics 1500, Lagat is a former world champion in the distance and has also won Bronze and Silver at the Olympic level and Sully just kicks ass.
Symmonds had an inspiring performance at the US trials with his blistering kick over the final 200 meters that stamped him as the undisputed American champion of the 800 meters. Unless Lagat’s post-olympic injury is still hampering him and the rest of the field goes out super slow to allow it to be a kicker’s race, Symmonds isn’t going to do anything noteworthy here besides possibly go for a PR. On the road. On a straight course. On a net downhill.
